At least 84,637 people have applied for a paltry 500 vacancies at the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), sparking renewed interest in the unemployment situation in the country.

Myjoyonline.com has learnt the bulk of applicants came from the Greater Accra Region with over 15,000 people followed by the Ashanti and Brong Ahafo Regions.
The development has triggered calls from Ghanaians for the government to focus its attention on job creation.
A man who spoke to Myjoyonline.com Friday said the situation is a mockery of Ghana’s progress since independence.
“If our energetic youth will struggle for jobs in their own country in this manner, then we are not growing as a people,” he registered his disappointment.
The Immigration Service is reported to have raked in GHS4,231,850 from the sale of recruitment e-vouchers sold at GHS50 each to applicants.
The Service is seeking to recruit only 500 officers nationwide, but at the end of the exercise spanning one month, at least 84,637 people had purchased the e-voucher.
Out of the number, Myjoyonline.com has gathered only 47,4777 people were shortlisted for the second phase of the selection process.
The Ghana Immigration Service has been widely criticized by the public for overselling the form when the available vacancies were limited.
But GIS Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Michael Amoako Attah has mounted a strong defense, saying the Service did no wrong.
He said the GIS could not have prevented anyone from applying for the job because the vacancies were opened to all citizens who meet the requirements.
