The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has surprisingly declared that the headmaster in the leaked sex video involving a supposed 19-year-old student did nothing wrong.
Many Ghanaians were outraged after a four-minute video of one headmaster having sex with his teenage pupil went viral. Robert Sepey, headteacher in leaked sex video
The headmaster was later identified as Robert Sepey, who heads the Breman Edumanu District Authority Basic School in the Central region. Despite wild condemnation from the public, the Central Regional Secretary of GNAT, Buadu Abedu William, insists the headmaster did nothing wrong.
According to him, the parents of the teenage girl are aware of the relationship and have consented to it. Speaking on Accra-based Starr FM, he said investigations have revealed that the headmaster has been taking care of the teenage girl as well as paying her fees. “Yes, the girl is 19 years and the parents are aware that the man is taking care of the girl, paying her fees at Odobeng Senior High School,” Abedu William said. He further revealed that the said video was recorded on the girl’s phone and may have been leaked by the son of the Chief in the community.
“It was on the chip of the girl’s phone, our investigations indicate that there’s a gentleman also in the village with a gang who is purported to be the chief’s son and they might have sent the video out,” he asserted.
The headmaster involved in the video absconded the town after the video went viral, but Abedu Williams has ruled out any sanctions for him. According to the GNAT rep, the Association is more concerned about the level of teaching by teachers and not morality. He said once the girl is not a teenager, only the employer of the headmaster has the right to sanction him. “For us, we are basically concerned with a teacher and a school girl…that one [sanction] is up to the employer to handle that issue. When we talk about law, morality doesn’t exist in law.
What we were looking for was whether the girl was a minor. “The sanction is spelt out in the code of conduct and it is the employer, that is the Ghana Education Service…and if there’s any charge…they are the employers. When they establish prima facie then they can put the gentleman before a disciplinary committee,” he added.
